It’s Friday already! Last Friday of April and that both excites me and gives me anxiety. I say it a lot but this year is going by so damn fast! So much is changing this year and I’ve noticed positive energy around me after my fasting and Bible Study began. With my mindset changing, I’m also working on changing my lifestyle. This includes my eating habits, exercise habits, confidence, face routine and care, and my hair system. Formulate comes in to play at this point. It’s customized shampoo and conditioner made only after filling out the survey necessary for you to get the best formula for your hair.
This post is in collaboration with Formulate. I received the shampoo and conditioner free in exchange for a review. Rest assured that all opinions are of my own accord. Read more on my disclosure.
I’m going to get right into the post because it’s going to be a bit lengthy. Grab a glass of wine or tea, put your hair up or take it down, and get comfy!
Getting my custom formula
First and foremost Formulates process is preservative free, sulfate free, paraben free, and cruelty-free.
Now onto the process. It starts out fun, you take a survey telling Formulate all about your hair. What your current struggles are, what strengths and loves you have, the texture of your hair, and what goals you have. It took about 10 minutes to fill out but I wasn’t complaining because neither the questions, nor answers, were boring. They were realistic questions that made me feel Formulate really cares for my hair.
Breaking down my formula, my hair at the time of this survey was coarse in thickness, coily in texture, oily and dry moisture with a tight and itchy scalp. By the end of this bottle, I should have improved scalp health, lengthened hair, more curl definition, less frizz, and mended split-ends. Quick fun part: you can pick your scent and how strong you want it! I chose Tidal which is
a swirl of the shore with mineral notes from the sea, sun-drenched sand, and rich coconut.
After completing the survey my Formulate custom shampoo and conditioner arrived within a week. Each bottle is 14.0 oz (415ml) and is projected to last for a few months. According to Formulates website, my next order isn’t expected until November but I did reach out to my contact at Formulate and she said that could be wrong. As of now, I’m just going with the flow.
Instructions for the system are to use 5 pumps of the shampoo, work it through my hair starting at the roots, rinse, then repeat once more. The second time gives me a rich lather because my hair is clean from the first time around. For the conditioner, just 5 pumps worked from ends to roots and combed through works fine. It’s something to get used to because I’m used to seeing a lather on my hair from the conditioner and this doesn’t give any lather. However, I can feel it working so it doesn’t worry me.
My hair journey
When I was in middle school, I had my first perm. I thought it was the best thing. The burning and hot comb were worth it at the time! Growing older, I realized how horrible that was for my hair. I’ve been perm free for a little over 5 years now and couldn’t be happier. Yes, my hair gives me problems and some days I want to chop it all off but I’m grateful I’ve grown out the years of damage I’ve done to it!
I’ve spoken about my hair in a few blog posts. If you read them, you know that my main hair problem is frizz. A few formulas have helped with moisture, or shine, or dry scalp. The Frizz Defy system with L’Oreal even worked, a bit.
There’s something all my previous systems have in common. None of them did everything for my hair.
I’ve been using this system for about a month now, 4 uses in total and I’ve already seen such a difference in my hair. Considering this could last me until November, I am super excited about that and the price of $49 doesn’t scare me at all if I only have to purchase this twice a year.

Formulate for the win?
Quick answer: yes. Absolutely.
The long answer: I definitely want to stick with this. It’s not perfect, but I have noticed how much more healthy my hair has been.
Why is it not perfect?
My frizz isn’t gone completely yet, but it’s less noticeable. My scalp is less dry but it only lasts for a few days and before the week is up, I’m dealing with a dry scalp and dandruff buildup. The fragrance isn’t really…there. It doesn’t smell bad, but it doesn’t give me tidal scents but the scent does last until the next wash.
Why I do recommend it.
My hair has so much less breakage. I used to shed more than two fist fulls of hair during my wash and detangling. Now it’s barely over one fist full. I can actually do the wash-n-go style. Before Formulate, I couldn’t do that because my hair would dry up to a shrunk tight poof of hair. It wasn’t cute. My curls are defined, lush, soft and lengthened. If the formula or scent doesn’t work for you the first time around, Formulate will rework the formula and exchange it for you completely free! They want you to be happy with your hair and are willing to go the extra mile to make that happen. Talk about winning!
Until next time,
